SOME BASIC QUESTIONS ON OPEN CHANNEL FLOW
Q. 1) What is open channel ?
ANS, The passage in which the liquid is not completely enclosed be solid boundary but has a free surface exposed to atmosphere is called open channel.
Q. 2) What is open channel flow ?
ANS. The flow of liquid in open channel flow is known as open channel flow .

# IMPORTANT NOTES :
1. Pressure flow in open channel flow is always hydrostatic.
2. It flows under atmospheric pressure due to component of gravity with a free surface .
3. Open channel flow is also called free surface flow .
# Examples Of Open Channel Flow
• Flow in natural rivers, streams, rivulets and drains
• Flow in irrigation canal
• Flow in sewers
• Flow in culverts with a free surface
• Flow in pipes not running full
• Flow over streets after heavy rainfall.
Different Types Of Forces Governing The Flow In
Open Channel
• Component of gravity (W sin(theta) )
where , "theta" is the bed slope
• Force of resistance(F due to friction, shear-
opposing gravity component due to surface roughness
•Inertia force
•Surface tension
(mostly negligible)
•Viscous force (very very small when the flow is turbulent)
