PRESTRESSED CONCRETE :-
Prestressed concrete is high-strength concrete with high tensile steel wires embedded and tensioned, prior to the application of external loads. By this, the concrete can be pre-compressed to such a degree that, after the structure is loaded, thek is practically no resultant tension developed in the beam.
# APPLICATION OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE
• long spans structures (as in bridges)
• where cracks (even hairline) in concrete are not permitted (as in pressure vessels, pipes and
water tanks)
• fatigue loading is encountered (as in rail track sleepers)
ADVANTAGES OF USING PRESTRESSED REINFORCEMENT
Serviceability and Strength
- Reduces occurrence of cracks .
- Freezing & thawing durability is higher than non prestressed concrete
- Section remains uncracked under service loads
- Reduction of steel corrosion
- Increase in durability.
- Full section is utilized
- Higher moment of inertia (higher stiffness)
- Less deformations (improved serviceability).
- Increase in shear capacity.
- Improved performance (resilience) under dynamic and fatigue loading.
- In areas where there are expansive clays or soils with low bearing capacity, post-tensioned slabs-on-ground and mat foundations reduce problems with cracking and differential settlement.
- Reduces self weight of building thereby reducing the lateral load resisting system. Suitable for use in pressure vessels, liquid retaining structures.
